Why Vegan?

Guide to Going and Staying Vegan

WHY VEGAN?

1. Stop Animal Cruelty

Millions of animals around the world are forced to endure horrific conditions and a brutal death in order that they be used to provide meat, milk, eggs and other animal products. Each of these animals is an individual with a capacity to suffer. Read more.

It is estimated that each person who eats meat consumes over 4,000 animals. Add in the number of animals that suffer and die for the milk, egg and honey industries and it is plain to see that by going vegan you will be directly saving a huge number of animals' lives.

You can use each mealtime to make a statement against animal cruelty - simply by going vegan.

2. Save the Environment

A vegan diet is much less of a drain on the environment that an animal-based diet. For instance much less land is needed to produce vegetables than is needed to produce meat.

For more information see Viva!'s guide, Planet on a Plate.

3. Improve your Health

Obviously there are other factors involved like quality of diet, but vegans are as healthy if not healthier than meat eaters. This is confirmed by the British Medical Association, World Health Organisation and the American Dietetic Association.

Three of the things that people in the West are most likely to die from are cancer, heart disease and stroke. Meat eaters are more prone to all three.

For a more information on the health aspect of the vegan diet see the Viva! and Vegan Society nutrition pages.

4. Help People

Meat-intensive diets contribute to the malnourishment of millions of people. For more information see The Vegan Society's booklet, Global Food Security.
